DESCRIPTION
This course will be based on student work in core course subjects: language arts, social studies, math and science. This will help students learn the English language that they need succeed academically. Students will be asked to bring in questions about class notes, reading and other assignments in your their core academic classes (humanities, language arts, social studies, math and science).
Students will be in a small group with other students from their grade level in the ESL program. Because each student in the class has different strengths, they will be able to learn from each other.
GOALS
To help students understand, read, write and speak English so that they can:
• communicate with teachers and other students;
• be successful in completing school work;
• be an active participant in activities both inside and outside of the classroom.
ACTIVITIES
The class activities will focus on:
• listening skills -- to understand academic conversations
• reading skills -- to understand difficult texts
• speaking skills -- to speak with confidence
• writing skills -- to plan and revise writing
• research and learning skills -- to work and learn independently
To write and speak well, we will also work on vocabulary related to your student work.
MATERIALS
1. pens, pencils, paper, and a 3-ring binder
2. textbooks from other classes
3. a bilingual dictionary (for example, English - Korean) for home
4. other materials as requested
ASSESSMENT
Student progress in learning English will be assessed by quizzes, tests, assignments, projects and presentations. Student performance on these assessments will be reflected by their academic grade in the class.
Effort, participation in class, attitude and use of class time all count toward the students' work habits grade for the class.
Current grades will be posted every Sunday on PowerSchool.
HOMEWORK
Assignments may be overnight or long-term. Students will receive homework one to three times each week after the first quarter. Students must complete all assignments neatly and on time. Assignments not meeting this criteria will not be accepted for full credit. If students do not turn in assignments, they will receive a zero.
LATE WORK
Late work will be accepted only if students have an excused absence from class. Students will have five school days after returning to school to make up the work. If students do not make up the work during that time, they will receive a zero.
HELP SESSIONS
The teacher will be available everyday, except Tuesdays, from 3:30 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. if students need help with their work. Students can also arrange a time before to meet with the teacher before school.

3rd – Parent contact and detention.
4th – Parent contact, referral to principal and detention.
5th – Parent conference and weekend detention.
